This, the largest North American woodpecker, is known for its size and the prominent crest on its head. Mainly a bird of large forested tracts, it is found mainly in eastern and southern Iowa but in recent years it has expanded its range up several river valleys so that it now is found locally in several places in north-central and even northwestern Iowa. Often first located by its loud call, Pileated Woodpeckers are crow sized and often are seen flying across a road or other open area in the familair undulating flight of woodpeckers. Pileated Woodpeckters tend to be fairly sedentary so once they are attracted to a site, they probably will stay there if their is appropriate cover, suitable nesting sites, and reasonable protection from disturbance.
