The Veery is a bird of fairly large tracts of woodland where it is seldom seem but often heard. Its almost haunting notes are a special treat to hear in Iowa but unfortunately, the species seems to be somewhat less common in the state now than previously. Most summer records of Veeries for Iowa come from eastern and central Iowa but occasionally one is found elsewhere. Presumably loss of large tracts of forest and fragmentation of those tracts that remain are factors leading to this apparent decline. Veeries also seem to have suffered from cowbird parasitism, a problem that is made worse by forest fragmentation. The Veery winters in northern South America, and we know little about any possible problems the species may be suffering there.
