This colorful warbler inhabits Iowa’s woodlands during the nesting season and then migrates south to Colombia, South America, where it spends the winter. Throughout its nesting range it seems to be facing threats from loss of woodland habitat and increasing fragmentation of any habitat that remains. In addition, the areas that it inhabits on the wintering grounds are prime areas for growing agricultural crops and hence it is not safe there either. In historical times this species never has been abundant in Iowa, but now its populations here seem somewhat reduced. Similar declines have been found elsewhere in its range and there is general concern for its future. The bluish-colored back and dark neck band are key field characters of the male Cerulean Warbler.
