The Prothonotary Warbler is a species of floodplain habitats, especially flooded timber along rivers and backwater areas. As a cavity nester, it occupies areas with suitable nest cavities available which usually means at least some mature trees. For the most part, in Iowa, Prothonotary Warblers are found along the Mississippi River and some of its larger tributaries, and it seldom ventures far from those areas. Although there is no real evidence that the species has declined in numbers in recent years, the general incursion of humans into riverfront areas along with the degredation of the Mississippi River itself is a cause for some concern. The male Prothonotary Warbler is largely golden yellow in color with bluish gray wings and, once seen well, is seldom forgotten.
