The Worm-eating Warbler is a woodland species that seems to always have been uncommon in Iowa. Most of its range is south and east of Iowa and thus we find this bird mainly in southeastern Iowa. There it occupies some of the larger woodland areas. Although little is known about the species in Iowa, presumably the general loss of woodlands and the fragmentation of those that remain have been major conservation issues for this species. Worm-eating Warblers winter in Central America and the West Indies and perhaps there are also problems on their wintering ground. Worm-eating Warblers seem to return to nesting sites year after year so long-term monitoring with the IBA program may help us better understand the habitat needs of this species.
