The Hooded Warbler inhabits fairly large tracts of woodland, especially those with mature trees. It apparently has never been very common in Iowa and there are only a few reports that document nests although it undoubtedly nests in the state every year. It is largely found in eastern and southern Iowa but occasionally wanders from there. It is a classic example of a neotropical migrant, that winters in Central America. Hooded Warbler populations have shown declines throughout their range and presumably habitat loss both on the breeding and wintering grounds have contributed to that decline. We know relatively little about this species in Iowa so protection of some of the sites where it typically is found is important for its continued survival here.
