Mississippi River, Pool 19

Directions:
On the Iowa side, access is available at Keokuk, River Road between Keokuk and Montrose, and along U.S. Highway 61 between Montrose and Ft. Madison.
Description:
Pool 19, formed by Lock and Dam 19 on the Mississippi River at Keokuk, in noted for one of the nation's most significant spring and fall migration stop-overs of Canvasback and Lesser Scaup - total numbers may reach 100,000 during peak concentrations. There are also major concentrations of other species, including dabbling ducks, other divers, Ruddy Duck, American Coot, and Ring-billed and Herring Gulls. There is also a winter concentration of Bald Eagles on the open water below the dam at Keokuk - peak numbers can approach 400.
