Swamp White Oak Preserve

State IBA

Muscatine County

Directions:  Detailed directions to the preserve are found at the The Nature Conservancy’s website, http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/iowa/preserves/art2239.html.

Description:  Swamp White Oak Preserve consists of mature savanna and moist woodland located within the lower Cedar River corridor in Muscatine County. In terms of unique habitat, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) states “Swamp White Oak Preserve’s high water table and frequent flooding support one of the best known examples of the globally rare swamp white oak woodland community.” The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and TNC have both targeted the lower Cedar River valley for landscape-level conservation. This TNC preserve is part of a network of properties that have been acquired in that regard. IBA criteria species: Swamp White Oak Preserve features extensive nesting habitat for Red-shouldered Hawk, a state-endangered species. Most recently, breeding was confirmed (occupied nest) in 2006. Bald Eagles have been observed here during spring and are found in the vicinity year round. Prothonotary Warbler, a species of high conservation priority, has also been recorded (singing males) on the property during the nesting season. Pileated Woodpecker, another species of high conservation priority, is a resident in nearby portions of the Cedar River valley and likely frequents the preserve as well. The area may also contain breeding populations of American Woodcock, Wood Thrush, and Cerulean Warbler. In addition to IBA criteria species, birds found at the preserve during summer include Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Yellow-throated Vireo, Eastern Towhee, and Orchard Oriole. TNC provides a summary of the flora, fauna, and conservation importance of Swamp White Oak Preserve at http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/iowa/preserves/art2239.html.
