Hayden Prairie State Preserve

Directions:  North-central Howard County, 5 mi. north of hiway 9 on V26.

Description:  Category 1: Northern Harrier nests at Hayden Prairie. Most recently, a male and a female were observed in close association in May of 2002. Category 2: Also regularly present are American Woodcock, Grassshopper Sparrow, and Bobolink. Category 3: The Hayden Prairie is a small remnant (~240 acres) of rare, original Iowa prairie. At least 149 species of native prairie plants have been found there.
